Cagnina

Cagnina, not to be confused with "Canina",a native vine grown in Ravenna's area, probably comes from Istria, transplanted in the Byzantine era when from Dalmatia came large loads of limestone to build the impressive monuments of Ravenna.

This is most likely the Refosco grape, identifiable by its characteristic red stalk, locally called "terrano".

Its funny name seems to originate from the fact that dogs, who followed the peasants at work in the vineyards, liked to nibble the particularly sugary grapes.
